<<< What is a "ZIP" file? >>>
ZIP is a method of file compression developed by Phil Katz and his company
known as PKWARE. Thus the program name PKZIP.
Most programs on this BBS are "zipped". This saves a tremendous amount of
disk space and also saves you a lot of time in downloading them since these
programs are reduced in size by as much as 75%. Most MS-DOS programs consist
of many files each of which is necessary for the program to function.
It would be extremely inconvenient to have to download each file seperately
so the program is "zipped" into one file that is considerably smaller than
the original program. After you recieve the file, you "unzip" the file back
to it's original size & it's ready to run.
In order for you to be able to use program files that have been "zipped",
you will need a copy of PKZIP. The newest release of PKZIP can be found in
the IBM Utility files section. This file is of the "self extracting" type,
meaning that it will self "unzip" automaticly when you run it. From there,
you can read the docs & do a little experimenting with it. It's actually quite
easy to learn & master.
